From the Director's Desk - December 2013
As the year comes to a close, we look back to reflect on the 12 months gone and ahead to 2014.
First, my most heartfelt “ Thank You” to the many generous people who have made contributions to our library throughout the year; by attending fundraisers, by volunteering in the library and at the book sales, by participating on committees and by generously responding to our Annual Challenge appeal.
I would particularly like to thank the Library’s Board of Trustees, who has most generously given their time, talent, and financial assistance to the library. The generosity of the people of New Canaan is what allows us to provide excellent services, collections, programs, and events that are evolving to reflect the needs of all our community.
This year we’ve had an excellent range of speakers, authors and others, visiting our library and sharing their ideas with us.
We’ve increased our digital offerings, with more e-books, more downloadable audio books, and more digital Magazines via Zinio. We’ve improved access to our excellent range of digital research content, and we’ve upgraded our catalog’s discovery interface so that searches get great results across all of our content: print and digital.
We are thrilled with the very positive response from library members to our latest customer service initiative: self service pick-up of reserves. Now you can not only place your reserves from your computer or Smartphone, but also pickup and checkout your reserved material without waiting in line. You can be in and out of the library in record time.
Our recent book sale has been a resounding success, thanks to the monumental efforts of Gery, Karen and the many other volunteers who put in hundreds of hours to make this event a fantastic success. Thanks too to George Baker for playing Carols during the event.
In the first few months of the New Year, look forward to several exciting changes in our library, starting with an exciting new MakerSpace. Thanks to recent targeted donations we will add a 3D printer as well as a new public access computer that will serve as a photo and video editing station. We are in the planning stages for our MakerSpace and will have this great new community asset in place in the first quarter of 2014.
Look out for new tables and chairs that will make working in the library, using our excellent Wifi, an ever more pleasant experience. In the digital library space, look out for our streaming video offering early in the New Year.
In a significant development, we will soon have a new Service Desk staffed by our Service team to help with any library need. We are very thankful for a very generous gift that has made the construction of this new service point possible.
2014 will bring a lot of very positive changes to New Canaan Library as we focus our energy on delivering excellent services, improved spaces, and continuous improvements to our service delivery model so that each experience in the library – actual or virtual is a positive and transformative one.
My warmest wishes for a joyous holiday season and a fantastic 2014
