Graphic Novels for April
Graphic novels have become an essential component of library collections for all ages, as well as having enormous potential for classroom use. Whether you're a reluctant reader or a lifelong fan you might be surprised at how many titles can now be found in graphic form. Here's a selection of some of our newest titles:
The dark tower (graphic novel). Bk. 6, The gunslinger : The journey begins -- Bringing the history of the Gunslinger into chronological order for the first time, the tale begins with a reckless act of courage that gains Roland his first set of guns and earns him and his friends, Cuthbert and Alain, a mission to Hambry on behalf of the Affiliation, an alliance resisting the ruinous advance of "the Good Man," a monster named John Farson. Meant to be a safe expedition, the mission becomes instead Roland's first experience of the evil forces he will encounter again and again, in a myriad of disguises.
Batman : Time and the Batman -- Yesterday: The Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder, held hostage by an alliance of masterminds with time on their side. Today: A new Dynamic Duo, struggling to honor their predecessors' memory by facing an old enemy and solving an impossible crime. Tomorrow: An army of Batmen, separated by decades and united by a common cause, take the fight to the enemy. Forever: No matter when, no matter where, no matter how dark, all evildoers will learn that there are two forces from which they can never escape-- Time, and the Batman.
Lewis and Clark -- In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark departed St. Louis, Missouri, for one of the greatest adventures this nation has ever known. Appointed and funded by President Jefferson himself, and led by a cadre of experts (including the famous Sacajawea), the expedition was considered a success almost before it had begun.
Star Wars : The Old Republic. Vol. 1, Blood of the empire -- Young Teneb Kel hopes to rise above his humble beginnings as a slave and prove his worth to the Dark Council by hunting Jedi knights, but instead he is sent after a fellow Sith who has betrayed the Empire.
Manga for the beginner chibis : everything you need to start drawing the super-cute characters of Japanese comics -- Excruciatingly cute, highly stylized, and beloved in all manga genres (fantasy, magical girls, shounen, anthro, sci-fi-, and more), without them, manga would barely exist. And now you can learn, step by step, how to draw virtually every chibi out there, how to "chibify" ordinary manga characters and how to invent your very own designs!
Superman : Last stand of New Krypton. Vol. 2 -- With his friends -- Supergirl, Superboy, Mon-El, and the Legion of Super-Heroes -- by his side, Superman must wage an all-out battle aboard Brainiac's ship. Will he succeed? Will New Krypton rise again? Or will this besieged world and its noble protectors make their last stand?
New spring : prequel to Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series -- the story of the search for the infant Dragon Reborn and of the adventures of Moiraine Damodred, a young Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, the uncrowned king of a long-dead nation. Adapted by noted comics writer Chuck Dixon with the full cooperation of Robert Jordan, and illustrated by artists Mike Miller and Harvey Tolibao.
Afterschool Charisma. Volume 2 -- St. Kleio Academy is a very exclusive school. To enroll, a student must be the clone of a famous historical figure. Basic Buddhism through comics -- A fun and novel look at the esoteric and occasionally difficult-to-grasp concepts behind Buddhism. Intended for adults as well as children, this comic-style book is an excellent guide for both those who have freshly entered the gate of Buddhism and those who have been practicing the teachings for a long time. Consisting of 23 episodes, this book offers not only easy-to-understand descriptions of Buddhist concepts, but also the means to apply them in our daily lives.
Sherlock Holmes : The sign of the four -- When Miss Mary Morstan calls on 221B Baker Street, the "utterly inexplicable" story she tells stirs the heart of Dr. John Watson -- and rouses his friend Sherlock Holmes from his self-induced lethargy. For who else but London's only unofficial consulting detective could possibly solve the mystery of the disappearing Army officer, the one-legged man, his barefoot accomplice, the missing treasure chest, and... the "sign of the four"?
Buffy the vampire slayer : tales -- Including never-before-collected short stories that take place during the New York Times best-selling series Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Tales is the ultimate reading experience for any fan of the show or vampire stories at large!

When his classmate and aspiring writer Akito Takagi discovers his talent, he begs Moritaka to team up with him as a manga-creating duo. But what exactly does it take to make it in the manga-publishing world? Moritaka is hesitant to seriously consider Akito's proposal because he knows how difficult reaching the professional level can be. Still, encouragement from persistent Akito and motivation from his crush push Moritaka to test his limits!
Crime and punishment : a graphic novel -- Dostoevsky draws a grim portrait of nineteenth century Russia, a society divided into the depraved rich and the helpless poor. Hunted by police and his own conscience, Raskolnikov is driven toward confession. He despairs that only by turning himself in will he find reprieve from his agony or, maybe, he will find salvation.
The astounding Wolf-Man. Volume 4 -- When Gary Hampton is mauled and left for dead, his life takes a drastic turn. Gary is cursed. When the moon is full he transforms into a beast of the night -- a werewolf, but this curse will not be used for evil -- witness the birth of the world's most unique new superhero: Wolf-Man.
