Kids and eBooks
Do you have a reluctant reader, or perhaps a child struggling to keep up with their grade-level in reading? Research is starting to trickle in validating the benefits of using ebooks as a tool to help these children. The following article from School Library Journal tells of a teacher using Tumblebooks as part of her strategy in a class of struggling readers. Not only did the group using Tumblebooks have fun but they outstripped their classmates by more than 20% in post-class testing.
The Library's website provides 24/7 access to Tumblebooks through the Kids page. You can use it to have your child listen to stories, with or without the audio track. The audio track highlights each sentence as it is being read. Turn off the audio track to read silently and set to Manual to read at your own speed. The selection of books can be sorted by grade level, AR level and some by Lexile level. The books are also searchable by author or title.
