Teen Review: Whales on Stilts by MT Anderson
When you log your reading for our teen summer reading club, you can write a review of what you've read. This is one of those reviews.
When I first picked up this book, it was a joke--I have a friend who is OBSESSED with whales, so naturally seeing a story with the title "Whales on Stilts!" caught my attention. As I was reading it in the car, I began to notice that the book wasn't just weird because it was about whales--it is just completely bizarre. One of the discussion questions in the back of the book quite literally reads: "If you could literally drive any whale at all, would you drive a baleen whale or a toothed whale? (Please show your work)". My friends and I had a good laugh over it--definitely don't approach this book if you are over 13 and are looking for a serious read--but it was quite amusing and I'd actually consider reading it again, if not for all the whales that shoot lasers out of their eyes but for the enjoyment of hearing about the crazy leprechauns who attacked Katie.
