Hands On: Make Your Own Contact Microphone Workshop
As part of Hands On, our new series of DIY workshops, we invite participants of this workshop to explore the inner sounds of things by making and using a contact microphone.
With the contact mic that you will make yourself during this workshop you will be able to explore a secretive sonic world, using it to to pick up sounds from objects, instruments and more. Additionally, with a laptop, phone, or other kind of recording device, you can record and keep these sounds forever!
You will learn basic DIY skills like working with tools, stripping wire, and soldering, and you'll walk out of this workshop with a contact mic made with your own hands! (They also make great gifts!)
Scott Petersen, experimental music composer, musician, and tinkerer, will be leading the workshop. He has given this workshop (and many more) at MakeHaven, a DIY maker space in New Haven, CT where he is a founding member. Scott currently works as the technical exemplar of the Department of Music at Yale University. You can see/hear many of his projects at www.scacinto.com and check out the exciting happenings going on at MakeHaven at www.makehaven.org.
