McDaniel Lecture Series Presents The Battery to Olana: Public Gardens along the Hudson
On Sunday, March 3 at 3:00 pm, authors Nancy Berner and Susan Lowry will present a slide lecture entitled “The Battery to Olana: Public Gardens along the Hudson.” This program is part of the Susan McDaniel Garden Design Lecture Series at the Library and will take place in the Adrian Lamb Room on the lower level of the Library.
Nancy Berner has worked as a book editor and an editorial consultant to several non-profits. She is on the board of the Hudson Highlands Land Trust and the Glynwood Center. Susan Lowry was a television journalist in Canada and the United States before switching fields and earning a diploma in landscape architecture. They both live in New York City, where they are longtime volunteers at the Conservatory Garden in Central Park. Susan and Nancy are the authors of Garden Guide: New York City (The Little Bookroom, 2002; revised edition, Norton 2010), a guide to over 100 public gardens in all five boroughs of the city, and Gardens of the Hudson Valley (Monacelli, 2010), with photographs by Sue Daley and Steve Gross. Copies of the books will be available after the lecture for purchase and signing. The authors have lectured widely in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut and are currently working on a book about public and private gardens in New Jersey, to be published by Monacelli Press in Fall 2014.
This lecture is presented in memory of Susan McDaniel, a New Canaan resident, landscape architect and lifelong gardener, who passed away in 2000. Her family and friends established a fund in her memory at New Canaan Library to develop a collection of books and other materials on the subject of landscape architecture and garden design. The collection has grown to include more than 350 titles, all of which are available for loan at the Library. To see a list of the McDaniel titles, please visit the Library’s catalog at catalog.newcanaanlibrary.org, click on “Special Collections,” and scroll down to the link “Susan McDaniel Collection.” The McDaniel Fund also sponsors the annual Susan McDaniel Garden Design Lecture Series.
