From The Director's Desk
It has been one month since I joined the team at New Canaan Library. It has been a wonderful first month and I’ve been astounded by the warmth of the welcome I have received. I’ve met so many delightful people from the New Canaan community and look forward to meeting many more in the months ahead.
I am currently focused on getting to know all the people who work in the library and learning about the services we provide to our community. There is a lot on offer: from the e-books, downloadable audio books and e-magazines available via our online space; to the regular line-up of guest speakers, programs for children; excellent electronic and print offerings; as well as Wi-Fi capacity for over 1000 visitors at a time, and a facility for members of the library to convert their old VHS tapes to DVD. We have a wide range of adaptive technologies for members with visual or auditory impairments and a range of devices available to be borrowed for those members who want to try out an e-reader.
The team at the library offer a range of technology tuition opportunities for members of the community and a full-service information desk where library users can get help with all manner of information requests.
Last week, our teen librarian hosted a digital scavenger hunt that was very well received by the crowd, while one of our children’s librarians organized a Skype session with the author of a book that the children had read in their library book group. In the adult area the reference team organized “blind date with a book” wherein they covered carefully selected books in brown paper and provided a few choice clues about the contents – providing a fun way for library members to pick up a great read to take away on summer vacation.
