From the Director's Desk - July 2014

As I sit beside an open window on a glorious summer afternoon,  I'm reflecting on the year just ended and the year ahead, as I contemplate this blog post.
New Canaan Library has achieved a great deal these past 12 months and the growing numbers of people through our doors and into our website indicate that the community is enjoying the changes to our services and spaces. Our newly reorganized team is gearing up to provide even more compelling collections, services and learning opportunities in the year ahead.

Our Makerspace which has seen great use already, will be expanding in the weeks and months ahead as we use grant money from New Canaan Community Foundation to acquire another 3D printer, Arduino and raspberry pi kits and more.   We will integrate all of this equipment into our growing offering of technology classes in the library.

Our teen area and services to teens are changing and growing under the brilliant direction of Cheryl Capitani, our teen librarian. Using a generous special donation to improve the teen area Cheryl has been working with the teen advisory board to revamp the space, while expanding multi-fold the range of learning experiences for this important part of our community. The recent "Coding for Girls" program was an unrivalled success. It was totally sold out and the demand for more Coding classes is huge.

Our summer reading program for children has kicked off and we are excited to see the large numbers of local students participating in this program - which supports family and school to continue the literacy development for children during the long summer break. Summer reading programs are one of the best ways to combat the well documented "summer slide" (when children lose ground in their reading ability through lack of reading "mileage" over the summer months). New Canaan's families are voracious readers and users of our library. Almost half the print books borrowed from our collections each year are from the children's collection.

New Canaan readers are embracing our carefully curated and fast growing digital collections. Our very talented Collection Manager: Lauren Phillips and her team are growing and maintaining our great collections in an increasing number of formats. Year-end statistics indicate that our members are enjoying our digital collections in unprecedented numbers. EBook borrowing is up over 23% since this time last year. Digital downloadable audio book borrowing is up a whopping 50% for the period! Digital magazine borrowing is up 35% as well. Our latest digital offer: Streaming digital video and audio has been really well received and use is growing rapidly. Total digital borrowing is up 34% year on year.

Lauren and I thought you might enjoy knowing the top 5 titles in a variety of our digital formats for the month of June, below. Remember- if you need help learning to download these items to your device, our friendly information desk team is available to teach you.
Whatever the format or content- you can enjoy reading outdoors in our new pocket park, now ready for the community to enjoy.
