From the Director's Desk - November 2013

As the chill in the air becomes more persistent and the days grow shorter, my thoughts drift to long evenings reading beside the fire or enjoying a robust discussion while lingering over a warming dinner with family and friends.

Here in the library we have plenty happening day and evening to attract you in out of the cold.  We’ve got two top billing events in November. College Football with Armen Keteyian and Jeff Benedict, co-authors of "The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big-Time College Football” on November 5.

Then on November 24 we are delighted to welcome Anthony Lake, executive director of UNICEF to deliver the 7th annual Anita Houston Memorial Lecture.

Mr. Lake has a long and distinguished career in foreign policy, humanitarian and development in both government and non-governmental organizations.

Our Annual Challenge has just kicked off. This year our goal is to raise $415,000.

The Town of New Canaan generously provides us with a grant annually, which currently covers around 82% of our operating costs. The funds we receive through the generous donations from private individuals during the Challenge, along with our book sales and our big annual events such as Books, Blues & BBQ and the Literary Luncheon are all critical to the delivery of excellent, services, collections and programs in the library.

Our digital collections continue to grow. We’ve added a lot of great new e-book and audio-book titles for you to download as well as even more super digital magazines. I’m currently reading the digital version of Smithsonian, Harpers Bazaar and Runner’s World magazines. If you would like help to access these great digital collections, call in to the library with your device and one of our helpful reference team with sit with you and walk you through the process to download the books or magazines onto your computer, tablet or phone.

Lastly, we welcome Karen and Gery to the library. These are our two new volunteers who answered the call for a book sale coordinator. They are just getting started and are looking for helpers to assist with an upcoming book sale in December.

Best wishes for a great November and a very Happy Thanksgiving.
