New Canaan Library Volunteer Program

New Canaan Library welcomes volunteers of all ages and interests to share their time and talents with us. They perform many important tasks that make the Library more comfortable, its collection more accessible and its services more complete.

Volunteers assist the staff with ongoing tasks and special projects in all library departments including Children's, Circulation, Collection Management and Reference & Information Services. They also help with the Library's Book Sales. They shelve new books, audio books and DVDs; organize newspapers and magazines;  process new books, update records in the catalog, check circulation activity, delete items from the online catalog; and help the Children's Librarian with special craft projects and programs.

To volunteer at New Canaan Library, no prior experience or professional library education is necessary. The Library offers a one hour volunteer orientation session on the second Wednesday of each month from 10-11 a.m. The Volunteer Coordinator interviews the prospective volunteer to match his or her skills with the needs of a Library department. Training for the specific job is given in that department.  Volunteers work once a week for two hours at a mutually agreed upon time.

Library volunteering is great for community service; college applications, and confirmation. Teen volunteers assist in various tasks including reshelving books, magazines and DVDs, craft projects and summer reading programs. Teens may also participate on the library's Teen Advisory Board, which helps choose new books and helps with library programs.
