April 9 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Location: Curtis Gallery

When Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines in 2013, it was the strongest storm ever recorded. It exacted a horrific death toll while wreaking structural and environmental devastation across the country. After originally intending to visit the Philippines for only a short time to help rebuild a rural school, Marshall Mayer and the other founders of Young Pioneer Disaster Response (“YPDR”) stayed to provide emergency and ongoing relief in a hard-hit area mostly ignored by large-scale efforts and the international media. Shortly after founding YPDR, they expanded the scope of their mission to include social and environmental programs that are helping people in the Philippines to this day.

Marshall will be at the library to talk about his experience working on the ground with YPDR, providing emergency relief to affected communities. He will also discuss the Marine Restoration Program started by the organization, an ecological initiative which seeks to restore native marine habitats through the use of artificial reefs.
