What is left of Africa’s elephant population is threatened by poachers who sell the animals’ tusks in the illegal ivory trade. In 2012, China was characterized as the world’s greatest villain when it came to smuggled ivory. Four years later, China announced it would completely shut down its domestic ivory trade by the end of 2017. This decision was hailed by conservation groups as “historic” and a “game-changer” for the future of elephants. What is behind this movement, and what can we learn from it? Will the ban save the elephants? What should be the next steps?
