[May 21, 2012] –The college admissions process has become a multi-tiered, and often anxiety-provoking, experience for parents and teens alike. Trends in admissions criteria shift with the times, highlighting the need for applicants to keep abreast of current expectations on the part of colleges.
To help parents and teens address these issues New Canaan Library and Dunbar Educational Consultants will be hosting a panel on trends in college admissions at 7:30 pm on Monday, June 11 in the Lamb Room at the Library.
Don Dunbar, founder of Dunbar Educational Consultants, announces that the firm is partnering with New Canaan Library to host a panel discussion on trends in college admissions featuring three college admissions deans from Pomona College, Middlebury College, and the University of Vermont.
“I have observed in over thirty years of working in college admissions that the field is extraordinarily dynamic, responding to economic, demographic and cultural changes. We are so excited to bring together this panel, representing many, many years of experience across a variety of institutions of higher education, to share their insights with us as to the dominant trends today. It should be a very interesting evening,” remarked Dunbar.
The panelists include Seth Allen of Pomona College; Robert Clagett, former Dean of Admissions at Middlebury College; and Christopher Lucier, Vice President for Enrolment Management at the University of Vermont.
Seth Allen is Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Pomona College in Claremont, CA. Prior to Pomona, Allen held positions as Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Grinnell College (IA) and Dean of Admissions at Dickinson College (PA). Originally from the Boston area, Allen earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University, where he served in admissions and directed the enrollment research and planning office.
Robert Clagett served as the Dean of Admissions at Middlebury College for six years until 2011 and was a Senior Admissions Officer and Associate Director of Financial Aid at Harvard College for 21 years. He is currently an senior advisor to the Middlebury Admissions Office.
Christopher Lucier started his career in admissions work in 2001 at the University of Michigan where he served as Senior Associate Director and Director of Recruitment. In 2007, he moved to the University of Vermont where he is currently the Vice President for Enrollment Management, responsible for coordinating all matters related to undergraduate recruitment and retention across the university’s many offices.
Mr. Dunbar added, “While stress related to the college admissions process is common, we feel that the best way for students and parents to manage the process is to be as well-informed as possible. We hope that Monday’s panel answers many of the questions families have and perhaps even some questions they didn’t consider.”
