Conversations With Business Leaders with Chase Carey
Chase Carey, News Corporation President and Chief Operating Officer, will share his insights on navigating today’s challenging world in his talk, "Managing Businesses in an Increasingly Volatile and Complex World," on Sunday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the Library's Adrian Lamb Room.
Businesses today operate in a period of unique uncertainty and change. Companies must navigate a landscape that is constantly disrupted by new digital technologies, while facing an increasingly flat world with political and regulatory challenges around every corner, not to mention the rapidly shifting social lifestyles and priorities of consumers. The media industry sits at the crossroads of these forces. No company has had a greater role in driving change in the media industry during the last three decades than News Corporation.
Chase Carey is President and Chief Operating Officer of News Corporation, a position he has held since July, 2009. In his role, he manages global operations in film, television, newspaper and book publishing, as well as the emerging digital and education arenas. Key businesses he oversees include Twentieth Century Fox Film, The Wall Street Journal, Sky satellite television platforms across Europe and Asia, and the global family of Fox television networks in entertainment, sports, and news.
In the past four years, Mr. Carey has helped lead News Corporation through a period of unique global growth and transformation. The Company has launched new sports channels in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, invested in businesses ranging from the YES Network to Sky Deutschland in Germany, and transformed the broadcast television industry by making Fox the first broadcast network to transition to a subscription business with cable and satellite providers. Most recently, Fox has announced plans for new national sports and entertainment networks in the US. Mr. Carey has also helped guide News Corporation through its plans to separate into two publicly-traded companies; one centered on film and television and the other built around newspapers, book publishing and Australian businesses.
Mr. Carey initially joined News Corporation in 1988, shortly after Rupert Murdoch acquired Twentieth Century Fox and launched the Fox television network. During the subsequent 15 years, he played a key role in building Fox into a true fourth network, launching Fox television sports and news networks in the U.S., and developing television networks and distribution businesses around the world. In 2003, Mr. Carey became President and Chief Executive Officer of DIRECTV after News Corporation acquired a minority position in the struggling publicly-traded company, which had just ended a failed attempted merger. Over the next six years, he led DIRECTV through a period of restructuring and unprecedented growth as the business rose to a position of industry leadership in the U.S. and Latin America.
Mr. Carey is a graduate of Colgate University and Harvard Business School. He serves on the Board of Directors of News Corporation, British Sky Broadcasting, and Sky Deutschland, also serving as a Trustee Emeritus of Colgate University. He graduated from New Canaan High School in 1972. He, his wife, Wendy, and his two children have lived in New Canaan since 2000.
