Last day of the Out on a Limb art exhibit
New Canaan Library is pleased to host an art exhibition entitled Out on a Limb, presenting two artists’ striking and personal interpretations of the natural world. Out on a Limb features the works of local artists Wendy Shalen and Sally Frank. Though both artists have a wide range of artistic focus and expression, this show highlights the shared concentration of artistic interpretation of nature.
Through the disciplines of painting and drawing, Wendy Shalen seeks “the living spirit of the model, the air and light in a landscape, the delicate textures and vibrant color in a still life.” Through etchings, monotypes and monoprints, printmaker Sally Frank displays work that is inspired by the natural world. Trees and woodland landscapes are the main focus of her work, as she successfully conveys “the distinctive beauty, energy and sense of balance found in nature."
Wendy Shalen graduated from Brandeis University with a BA in Fine Arts (Art History), continuing her studies at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design, New York, NY, among other art institutions. She was the curator of the Katonah Museum’s Artists Exhibit at Northern Westchester Hospital, Mr. Kisco, NY from 2003 – 2010. Ms. Shalen has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the northeast.
Sally Frank holds a Master of Arts, Printmaking from CW Post College, Greenvale, NY.
She was the subject of September 2010 Fairfield County LOOK’s Artist Interview with Sally Frank. Ms. Frank has been part of numerous juried and curated exhibitions in Fairfield county and Northern Westchester. Frank has also had numerous solo exhibitions, most recently Tree Work, Pound Ridge Library Gallery, Pound Ridge, NY and Tree Work II, Rockwell Galleries, Ridgefield, CT.
Wendy Shalen - "When I draw or paint from the landscape, a model or still life, I react intuitively, with care and sensitivity. I am seeking the living spirit of the model, the air and light in a landscape, the delicate textures and vibrant color in a still life. I look for magic and humor in my work, and I cherish the unexpected and accidental." Learn more on the artist's website.>>
Sally Frank - I am a printmaker who creates etchings, monotypes and monoprints inspired by the natural world. Drawing has been a lifelong passion for me and the various techniques of printmaking provide a rich tool chest that can be especially suited to drawing. Printmaking is also an art of processes that requires planning and technical expertise but, at its most satisfying, can bring unexpected and spontaneous results. Learn more on the artist's website.>>
