Getting Started

  1. Get the Overdrive App (Apple | Android)
  2. Sign Up For An Overdrive Account.
  3. Tap on the top left menu-icon.png and "Add a Library"
  4. Search for New Canaan Library. Tap on the name in the search results. Touch the star to save to your libraries.
  5. From the top left menu-icon.png select 'New Canaan Library.' Find 'sign in' at the upper right and enter your New Canaan Library card barcode number.
  6. You are now ready to start checking out eBooks from OverDrive.
  7. Search or browse for titles. To checkout a title, tap the book and click 'Borrow.'
  8. Once borrowed, download the eBook by tapping the 'Download' button, selecting 'EPUB eBook' and then 'Confirm & Download.'
  9. To read the eBooks downloaded to your device, tap the top left menu-icon.png and select 'Bookshelf.'
  10. Tap on a title to begin reading.

    Pro tip: OverDrive is integrated with our Catalog- you can check out OverDrive eBooks directly from the catalog with one click. To read a book you check out from the catalog on your tablet, open the OverDrive app, tap the top left menu-icon.png and tap New Canaan Library. Click menu-icon.png to view all of your checked out OverDrive items. Tap the 'Download' button next to any title to view on your device.
 
 

I want to get eBooks primarily on Kindle eReader

Getting Started

OverDrive
  1. First, make sure you are logged into the Amazon account associated with your Kindle.
  2. Next, login to your Library account using your last name and Library card number.
  3. Search for a title, author or subject.
  4. To limit your search by eBooks, select 'Ebooks' under Format in the left sidebar.
  5. Click 'Checkout with OverDrive' beside the title you want- confirm your check out and click ok.
  6. Click 'Get eBook' and select Kindle Book.
  7. You will be redirected to an Amazon 'Get Your Digital Library Loan' page- at the right, select the Kindle device that you want to deliver the eBook to and click 'Get Library Book.'
  8. The next time your Kindle is connected to WiFi, the book will be delivered.
 

I want to get eBooks primarily on my Nook eReader

Getting Started

OverDrive
  1. Create an OverDrive account, if you do not already have one.
  2. Download Adobe Digital Editions for Windows or Mac
  3. Open Adobe Digital Editions and sign in with your Adobe ID or OverDrive account when prompted.
  4. Connect your Nook to the computer.
  5. Login to your Library account using your last name and Library card number.
  6. Search for a title, author or subject.
  7. To limit your search by eBooks, select 'Ebooks' under Format in the left sidebar.
  8. Click 'Checkout with OverDrive' beside the title you want- confirm your check out and click ok.
  9. Click 'Get eBook' and select epub book.
  10. Open Adobe Digital Editions
  11. Connect your Nook to your computer.
  12. Drag and drop the title you want to transfer to your Nook from the 'Library View' to your device listed under 'My Devices' in the left sidebar.
  13. The book will remain active on your Nook for the borrow period.
 

I want to get eBooks on my tablet or smartphone & my Kindle eReader

Getting Started

OverDrive
  1. To ensure compatibility of your ebooks across a Kindle ereader, tablet and/or smartphone, download the Kindle app on your devices (Apple | Android).
  2. Sign into the Kindle app with your Amazon login to authorize the device under your Amazon account.
  3. On the device that you are checking out an eBook, make sure you are logged into the Amazon account associated with your Kindle either in your default browser or the Amazon app if installed.
  4. Next, login to your Library account using your last name and Library card number.
  5. Search for a title, author or subject.
  6. To limit your search by eBooks, select 'Ebooks' under Format in the left sidebar.
  7. Click 'Checkout with OverDrive' beside the title you want- confirm your check out and click ok.
  8. Click 'Get eBook' and select Kindle Book.
  9. You will be redirected to an Amazon 'Get Your Digital Library Loan' page- at the right, select the Kindle device (any device with the Kindle app is considered a Kindle device) that you want to deliver the eBook to and click 'Get Library Book.'

  5. Once borrowed, start reading by clicking 'Read in Your Browser"
  6. To resume a book, simply return to New Canaan Library's OverDrive page, tap the person icon and find the book you want to resume.

  2. After downloading, go to New Canaan Library's OverDrive page.

  4. You are now ready to start checking out eAudiobooks from OverDrive.
  5. Search or browse for titles. To checkout a title, hover over the item and click 'Borrow.'
  6. Once borrowed, start listening by clicking 'Download (MP3 Audiobook)' button.
  7. Open the downloaded file (look in your browser downloads). The file will open automatically in the OverDrive software isntalled.
    Hoopla
  1. Go to Hoopla Digital and click sing up in the top right.
  2. Create a Hoopla account
  3. You are now ready to start checking out eAudiobooks from Hoopla. Find an item to checkout and start listening right in your browser.

  3. To start reading, click 'Read Now' which will take you to your Zinio Reading List. Any magazines that you have checked out will display here. To read a magazine, click the cover to open. Be patient while the magazine is fully loaded.
  4. To check out additional magazines, you will need to return to the Library's Zinio page.
 
 
 

Read the New York Times for free with your New Canaan Library Card

Here's how it works.

New Users

  1. To set up a NY Times account through the Library, click here and enter your 14-digit New Canaan Library barcode number & click "Submit"
  2. Next "Create An Account" using your email address and a password of your choice (write this down, you will need it for future logins).
  3. You will then be able to access a 24-hour group pass to the New York Times by clicking “Go to NYTimes.com”.
  4. For the 24 hours that the group pass is active, you will be able to return to NYTimes.com on your computer without logging in again.

Returning Users

  1. Go to the New Canaan Library Digital Library page, click 'Magazines & Newspapers' and then New York Times.
  2. Enter your library card number.
  3. Click 'Login' and enter your account information. This will reactivate a 24 hour group pass.
