Salant Room Online

About the Salant Room  |  Resources  |  The Salant Room Online

The New Canaan Library received the papers of Richard Salant from his wife, Frances, in 1994. This gift contains hundreds of letters, memos, and other communications from Mr. Salant's years as President of CBS News (1961-1964, 1966-1979).

From 1994 through the present, the Salant Papers have been available to visitors to the Library. These documents were digitized and added, in electronic form, to the New Canaan Library's Website in June 2001. The subject headings assigned are those that appeared on many of the folders that the Library received from the Salant estate while others were added in 1995 by a Library intern who worked diligently to organize the collection by topic. More work will be done on subject access in the months ahead.

Content and perspective in this collection make these papers a unique contribution to the history, ethics, and methods of news broadcasters in the era of Vietnam and Watergate. These papers give fresh insight into television news - how it was gathered and reported in a turbulent period when news organizations themselves were not just reaching American households with the day's events but becoming newsworthy in their own right. It was in this Salant period that the power of television as a medium of news reporting began to be both appreciated and resented.

The Library is pleased to offer this collection for students, researchers and citizens interested in the media. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity, through the Richard Salant Papers, to contribute to scholarship in media history and analysis.
