From The Director's Desk September 2013

August in New Canaan has been fabulous with gorgeous days and cool evenings.  Although town was a little quiet, the library has been busy.

There is a lovely new installation in the Curtis Gallery in the library.  If you haven’t already; do call in to admire the beautiful wood cut prints and paintings by Randi Bull. The exhibition will run until 15 September.

Volunteers, board members and staff have been working tirelessly to prepare for the 6th Annual Literary Luncheon that will be held on September 19.  This is a major fundraising event for the library.  There are still a few seats available so call in to the library or go to the website if you are interested in reserving your place

For film enthusiasts, we have a new service available: DVD’s available on a One Day loan.  This is a select group of high demand films which can be borrowed for one day only. Find these films opposite the circulation desk.

We’ve also been busy with reading programs for all ages. The adult services team prepared a series of excellent themed displays with loads of great summer reading, including “ Blind Date with a good book”, which was a great success.  The children’s and teens programs have now wrapped up.  The great team in the children’s department hosted a variety of fun programs for children, including puppet shows, dancing events and music and even Disney princesses! The autumn schedule for the children’s area is now available. (http://newcanaanlibrary.org/events/kids).

SLERP, the teen summer program, finished with a “lock in”, after hours in the library. There will be a break in our Teen programming as Mallory our lovely teen librarian, has returned to University to complete her Library Master’s degree.

Our adult programming team, assisted by members of the community, is busy planning for a great series of lectures that the library hosts in the cooler months.  These include the upcoming UN Committee Lecture on Sunday, September 22 (http://newcanaanlibrary.org/events/reza-aslan-to-speak-at-the-library).

For my part, I am continuing to enjoy a steady stream of visitors and well wishers, and am delighted by the level of interest and support the library receives from the community.

Best wishes,

Lisa
