Introduction and Purpose

New Canaan Library will choose one artist for our biannual Artist in Residence program. This artist will have their work on display in the H. Pelham Curtis Gallery from April 9 – May 2, 2018 and will participate in several Library sponsored events that engages the community with their art. The Library will pay honorariums for each event the artist participates in and the artist may sell artwork on display in the Gallery.

The purpose of this program is to expose the Library’s community to new ways of thinking about art. Interactive events that include the participation of the community are an important component. The Artist in Residence will be expected to not just display their art in a passive exhibit – they will work together with Library staff to create learning experiences for the community.

Selection Process

The 2018 Artist in Residence will be chosen at the discretion of the Programming Librarian, Manager of Public Services, and Library Director. After submitting an application, artists will be contacted by November 15, 2017 to be notified of their application status.

Application Requirements

In order to apply for the Artist in Residence program, applicants must be able to travel to New Canaan Library for the scheduled Library events they agree to participate in. Applicants must be able to travel to the Library for the installation and removal of their exhibit on the agreed upon dates or arrange for someone else to install and remove the exhibit for them. Applicants must complete either the following online form, OR the following printable form on paper. Online applications are preferred, but paper forms may be printed, filled out, and delivered to:

If completing the online form, please follow instructions and attach photos of your artwork in the appropriate fields. If completing the paper form, please submit a CD or flashdrive containing photos of your artwork with your application and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your CD or flashdrive (if you wish for the Programming Librarian to sent it back).


Applications will be accepted from August 1, 2017 to November 1, 2017
Applicants will be contacted by November 15, 2017 to be notified of their application status
A final decision will be made and all applicants notified by December 31, 2017
