Artscapades Presents: The Harlem Renaissance: From Inception to Artistic Explosion

In this lecture, ArtScapades looks at Harlem in the early 20th Century as it was becoming the Black cultural mecca, focusing on the social and artistic explosion that was taking place.  ArtScapades discusses the lives and works of William H. Johnson, Romare Bearden, and Jacob Lawrence who depicted the African American experience.  Also included is a look at the art of Lawrence’s wife Gwendolyn Knight.

Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman, of ArtScapades, began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries and museums in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, and have been lecturing at New Canaan Library since 2010.
