ArtScapades presents Primitivism and Les Nabis
November 4, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

From the Jungle to the Garden
In Primitivism and Les Nabis: From the Jungle to the Garden, Artscapades will explore how Primitivism ushered in a new way of looking at and appropriating the forms of so-called “primitive” art. The Nabi group grew out of the work of Paul Gauguin, based on the idea that color and shape could represent experience. Both played large roles in radically changing the direction of European and American painting at the turn of the 20th century.
This lecture will look at the lives and works of four Post-Impressionist artists, Henri Rousseau, Paul Gauguin, Pierre Bonnard, and Édouard Vuillard. Approximately a dozen works per artist are discussed including iconic works and those that illustrate significant trends and events in their lives and careers.
ROBIN HOFFMAN & JODI STIFFELMAN, of ArtScapades, began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries and museums in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, and are returning for their twelfth season at New Canaan Library.
