Authors @ NCL: The Indian World of George Washington by Colin G. Calloway

April 28, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Location: Lamb Room

In The Indian World of George Washington, Colin G. Calloway returns the great Native American leaders of George Washington’s time – Shingas, Tanaghrisson, Bloody Fellow, Joseph Brant, Red Jacket, Little Turtle – to their rightful place in history. Tracing decades of Native American leaders’ interactions with Washington, from Washington’s early career as surveyor of Indian lands to his military career and later his presidency, Calloway invites us to reexamine the story of America’s beginnings.

COLIN G. CALLOWAY is John Kimball, Jr. 1943 Professor of History and Professor of Native American Studies at Dartmouth College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Leeds in England in 1978. After moving to the United States, he taught high school in Springfield, Vermont, served for two years as associate director and editor of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for the History of the American Indian at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and taught for seven years at the University of Wyoming. He has been associated with Dartmouth since 1990 when he first came as a visiting professor. He became a permanent member of the faculty in 1995. His previous books include A Scratch of the Pen and The Victory with No Name.
