Discussion Lab @ NCL: Explores “Recovering Civility”
October 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

New Canaan Library’s new community initiative, Discussion Lab @NCL, follows its successful debut last month with October’s discussion on civility – questioning whether we, as a society, can recover a level of civility. The discussion will take place on Thursday, October 10 at 10 a.m. in the Library’s Curtis Gallery.
Today, many of us find ourselves and the people around us more reactive to the news, our jobs and the state of life in general. The climate of non-stop news cycles, over the top social media posts and in-your-face politics has tipped the scale to a point where we ask, “Is civility dying?” Asking that question, and looking at solutions will be moderators Eric Fjeldal, Sr. Pastor of the United Methodist Church of New Canaan and Rev. Dr. Derrick Fallon of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. The two articles to read prior to the meeting will be available at New Canaan Library or accessed digitally.
The articles are:
- “Civility in Crisis: What You Can Do About It” By Phillip Browned in Notary News, October 17, 2017.
- “How to Have Difficult Conversations When You Don’t Like Conflict” by Joel Garfinkle in Harvard Business Review, May 24, 2017.
