Investigating Harmony: Part III – Harmonizing a Melody
July 31, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join a laid-back, fun, and highly educational discussion about music with local musician Michael-Louis Smith. The workshop will be accessible to musicians and non musicians and will cover elements of harmony from its finite parts to exploring chord progressions in familiar songs, and finally discussing the relationship between Harmony and Melody.
In part three of “Investigating Harmony” workshop participant will learn how a melody corresponds to its harmonic counterpoint. The group will analyze a well-known piece of music to see how the melody relates to the chords and learn how to change or reimagine the chords (reharmonization) to create an alternate harmonic landscape which also supports the existing melody. Music Theory Worksheets: Sheet Music can be found HERE.
Michael-Louis Smith is a jazz guitarist, composer, recording artist and educator. He received a Masters in Jazz Studies from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College.
