Marine ROVs with Manifold Robotics

March 14, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Location: Lamb Room

What is a marine ROV? How do they work? What can they do? The students in Spare Parts had to learn quickly the answer to these questions. Now it’s your turn! Join Dr. Porfiri and Dr. Laut, creators of the MR1 — a robotic marine vehicle capable of collecting water-quality and other data autonomously — at Manifold Robotics, to learn about the process of bringing a marine remotely operated vehicle from concept to working model.

MAURIZIO PORFIRI is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He is engaged in conducting and supervising research on dynamical systems theory, multiphysics modeling, and underwater robotics. Porfiri is the author of more than 250 journal publications and the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award. He has been included in the ‘‘Brilliant 10’’ list of Popular Science and his research featured in major media outlets, including CNN, NPR, Scientific American, and Discovery Channel.

JEFFREY LAUT received his PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering from New York University Tandon School of Engineering in January 2016, performing research on underwater robotics and human-machine interaction. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at New York University Tandon School of Engineering, where he is developing technology to increase the capabilities of aerial drones. In May of 2017, he founded Manifold Robotics, a startup company that develops small-scale autonomous boats for collecting environmental data.
