Med Ed: Weight, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Insomnia

This joint presentation by Drs. Asnis and Roca will explore the connections between weight, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and insomnia.

Obesity can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, which in turn can lead to insomnia. Dr. Asnis will talk about the specific mechanisms of the body that make it difficult to lose weight, and some medications that can be used effectively. Dr. Roca will discuss how sleep disruption is one of the components of obesity. The presentation will cover an overview of the basics of sleep including the different stages of sleep and sleep requirements. The important issues of OSA  and insomnia will be discussed, with explanations of what defines the conditions and how they are treated.


Dr. Asnis’s research background focused on exploring the metabolic consequences of bariatric surgery. In addition to her practice, she is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and enjoys teaching Stamford Hospital residents and Columbia medical students.

Dr. Roca has expertise in a number of related fields such as allergy, immunology, pulmonary, critical care and sleep. His training enables him to approach medical problems from different perspectives. He has won numerous teaching awards and has been selected by his peers as an exemplary physician. Dr. Roca has also been named a “Top Doctor” multiple times by Castle Connolly, New York Magazine and Connecticut Magazine.
