Opening Reception: Art & Text
October 10, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

New Canaan Library presents “Art & Text” by artists Jane Davila and Karen Kalkstein on view in the Curtis Gallery from October 8 – December 1.
A Q&A with the artist will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Everyone welcome!
Though markedly distinct from each other in subject matter and style, both Davila and Kalkstein’s arresting artwork unifies under the initiative’s theme of incorporating text within the art, as well as by both artists’ choice of working in mixed, highly tactile media.
JANE DAVILA , a fiber and mixed-media artist began her professional art career as a printmaker. She has made television appearances and published numerous books on the subject. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world, including the Lila Acheson Wallace Collection.
“I incorporate printmaking techniques and paper into my fiber work as a connection to the printmaking work that began my art career,” states Davila. “I am particularly drawn to fish, birds and insects as subjects and frequently include them within rectilinear compositions that represent abstractions of landscape.”
As an artist whose chosen media encompasses almost all – from ceramics, painting, and embroidery, to metal sculpture, and always photography, KAREN KALKSTEIN’s work featured in this exhibition focuses on the natural world. “My art work is about the colors, textures and rhythms of the natural world: birth, growth, death, decay — the earth with its hidden secrets and obvious grandeur.”
