July 11 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Location: Lamb Room

Set in the late renaissance and the bloody Inquisition, Velázquez’s life was filled with intrigue. He often broke with convention, not only with his radical style of painting, but his subject matter. He painted not only kings and queens but peasants, buffoons, jesters, dwarfs and other performers from the king’s royal court. These portraits rival Rembrandt for their skill and exploration of the soul.

With dreams of knighthood, Velázquez risked everything by hiding a deep secret that would have put him before the wrath of the Inquisitors. What was that secret? We will explore this question as well as look at this unparalleled artist’s incredible paintings and the many artists he influenced, including Picasso.

Diego Velázquez produced less than 200 paintings and yet he is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Don’t miss this exciting presentation on the artist that Manet called “the painters painter.”

CLIFF TISDELL is a visual artist. His work has been seen at Ivan Karp’s OK Harris Gallery, the Chautauqua Institute, the George Segal Gallery, Carnegie Hall and the Van der Plas Gallery. He is represented by Trager Contemporary. In an effort to add depth and insight to his presentation on Velázquez, which Mr. Tisdell has been making to organizations and libraries for the last two years, Mr. Tisdell recently returned from a trip to Spain where he did additional research on Velázquez, including tracking down his childhood home, visits to the primary collection at the Prado, seeking early work of Velázquez and his early teacher, Francisco Pacheco at the Seville Museum of Fine Arts as well as the connections between Velázquez, Salvador Dali and Picasso.

This September, Mr. Tisdell will be the resident artist at the Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center in Nyack, NY.
