Their life, love, and legacy (1882-1935)

‘The man through whose touch a few cubic inches become colossal.’

Gaston Lachaise, one of the 20th Century’s most daring sculptors, came here from Paris on the heels of a beautiful American woman 10 years his senior. Lachaise devoted his life to Isabel, putting her on a pedestal, as Louise Bourgeois says, both literally and figuratively. Come hear about their years in New York and Maine, their friends, their letters, and the challenges they faced. Come see the development of the man and of his sculpture, and comprehend the enduring love which inspired them both from the day they met, and survives in their powerful legacy.

Paula Hornbostel is the Director and a Trustee of the Lachaise Foundation. She has helped organize exhibitions of the work of Gaston Lachaise for museums around the world. After interning at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy, and guarding the work of Louise Bourgeois in the American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, she went on to earn her master’s degree from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU.  Paula worked for 11 years at Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, New York, where she helped organize “Gaston Lachaise: Sculptures and Drawings,” an exhibition which traveled to England, France, Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic. In 2009 she collaborated with George Stoney and David Bagnall on the documentary film “Flesh in Ecstasy: Gaston Lachaise and the Woman He Loved”. Most recently she was the Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Art Journal, which came out again in 2018 after a 25 year hiatus.
