The Listening Space: A Community Debate Moderated by Braver Angels

June 10, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Location: Zoom Videoconference

Please join us for this live debate on Thursday, June 10th at 7:00pm

Those who register for the debate below will be asked to indicate their standpoint six topics so that we may determine a debate topic that people have mixed views on, which will spark a lively discussion.

All adults are invited to take part in a virtual community debate on a timely topic, facilitated by Braver Angels and New Canaan Library, with support from the Community Mindfulness Project. Since 2016, Braver Angels has been hosting workshops, debates, community conversations in an effort to depolarize politics.

A Braver Angels debate is a highly structured conversation during which a group of people think together, listen carefully to one another, and allow themselves to be touched and perhaps changed by each other’s ideas. When done well, everyone walks out a little closer to the truth, more aware of the validity of opposing views, and with tighter community relationships. Learn more here.

The debate will be moderated by Bart McMann, Director of the Center for Citizenship and Just Democracy at The Frederick Gunn School in Washington, CT.The debate program was intentionally planned to take place one week after the Mindful Listening and Speaking two-part workshop, led by the Community Mindfulness Project on June 2 and 3, so that participants can put their newly refined communication skills to practice with energetic, respectful debating.

This program is part of The Listening Space, a new series established by New Canaan Library in the spring of 2021. The Listening Space offers an inclusive forum and public programs centered on active listening and storytelling between people with differing beliefs and identities, with the goal of building greater understanding and minimizing prejudice and polarization.
