New Canaan Library is excited to offer self-service pickup of books and other materials, beginning on June 15th. Read on for details, and please visit our website often to keep apprised of any updates. Thank you for your patience; as we work through a large volume of requests with extra precautions in place, it may take longer than usual to get your materials.

How can I borrow items?

Place a hold on an item through our online catalog. Please limit your requests to no more than 6 items per day. When you receive an email, you may pick up your items in the vestibule between the sliding glass doors (near the parking lot). Your items will already be checked out to your library card, so you may take them immediately. The hours for this takeaway service begin Monday, June 15, 2020 and are as follows:

  • Monday through Friday 10am-5pm
  • Saturday from 10am-1pm

Please wait until you receive an email to pick up your items. You must wear a mask and take only what is labeled with your name. Only one person may be in the vestibule at a time and, for the sake of other members and staff, do not enter the Library if you are unwell.

Please remember that our Digital Library is always open!

How can I return my books?

Please return all items to our outdoor returns bin, which is open during limited hours as follows:

  • Tuesday through Saturday 10am-1pm
  • OR until its capacity is met for the day

Due dates have been extended on all items currently checked out. We are currently quarantining all returned items, so they will remain on your account for several days after you return them. No fines will accrue for that period.

What are you doing about sanitizing the Library and the items being returned?

We will continue to deep clean the Library building. All returned items are quarantined before they are checked in. All staff members in the building wear masks and follow all guidelines put forward by state and local health authorities.

Can I request an InterLibrary Loan (ILL)?

Inter-Library Loans depend on other institutions, so our access to other materials is limited. While you may place an ILL request, it may take much longer than usual or may not be fulfilled.

Can I donate books and DVDs to the Library?

The Library no longer accepts book or DVD donations.  Please contact Goodwill or other local organizations to donate your used items.

I don’t have a Library Card! Can I get one?

Yes!  New Canaan residents may fill out the online card request form HERE.

When will you reopen your doors

We do not yet know, but we will continue to work with the New Canaan Health Department to ensure best practices. As this situation evolves, our services may be subject to change as well. We will continue to communicate with email updates, so please be sure to join our email list, and check our website for current information.
