Welcome to Express Service

New Canaan Library is open with limited Express Service.

All visitors MUST wear a mask that fully covers the nose and mouth inside the building at all times and maintain at least 6 feet distance from others.

You MUST have your library card to borrow materials.

Due to limited capacity requirements, you may be asked to wait to enter.

As the pandemic situation evolves, our policies are subject to frequent change. Please join our email list and check our website for current information.


Main Library, Children’s Library, and Computer Center Access

  • Monday 9am – 7PM; Tuesday-Friday 9AM – 5PM; Saturday 10AM – 2PM

Returns are accepted at our outside book drop 24 hours daily


What in-person services are available?

Holds pickup is now inside the building. You MUST bring your Library Card or Library Card number to check out materials using our self-service checkout machines.

Browsing the Main Library

  • Adult, Teen, and DVD browsing and borrowing via self-service checkout only. You must bring your library card or library card number
  • Photocopier and document scanner (please bring small bills or change to use at the print release station; staff cannot provide change.)
  • Faxing (exact change only please: $1 per page)
  • Reference assistance by phone or email is strongly encouraged
  • Computer Center with access to Internet and Microsoft Office (7 stations available)
  • Black & White (15 cents/page) and Color Printing (50 cents/page) – please bring small bills or change to use at the print release station; staff cannot provide change
  • Individualized computer and personal device help is not available in person at this time

Browsing the Children’s Library

  • Capacity is limited in the Children’s Library. Access is available on a first-come, first-served basis; there may be a short wait to enter. (Appointments have been discontinued at this time.)
  • Please be considerate of time spent in the room, particularly if others are waiting.
  • Children’s book and DVD browsing and borrowing available via self-service checkout only. You must bring your library card or library card number
  • Children under 12 must always be accompanied by an adult; children over 2 must always wear a mask
  • No children’s internet computers, toys, or play area available at this time

Health & Safety Precautions

  • All staff and visitors in the building must wear a mask that covers the mouth and nose at all times, without exception
  • We have completed the state’s self-certification process, and are in compliance with all sector reopening guidelines
  • We are limiting the number of people allowed in the building
  • Plexiglass partitions are installed at Service Desks
  • 6 feet of distance must always be maintained
  • No food or drinks permitted in the Library
  • Frequent cleaning of the building, high-touch areas, and service points throughout the day
  • Hand sanitizer stations are installed throughout the building

Services NOT currently available in person

  • Tables and seating have been removed from the Library
  • Meeting Rooms and Conference Rooms
  • Open Tech / Personal Electronic Device assistance
  • Salant Room / magazine browsing
  • 3D Printers/MakerLab/Virtual Reality/Sewing Machines
  • Toys, play area, and program room in the Children’s Library
  • Access to the Library’s lower level
  • Book donations are no longer accepted
  • Notary
  • Curtis Gallery exhibitions temporarily suspended
  • All programs, lectures, and workshops remain virtual at this time
  • At this time, tutoring is not currently permitted at the library
