Event Details

All New Canaan students in grades 7-12 can share their interest in civics by entering this essay contest co-sponsored by the New Canaan League of Women Voters and New Canaan Library. First prize is $300, second prize is $200, and third prize is $100! 

Essay Prompt: “This is a municipal election year. Why do these local elections matter?” 

Rules for participation: 

  1. The essay must be original and clearly address the prompt in 300 – 500 words. Include your name, grade, New Canaan school name, and contact information on the submitted essay. Using 12-point font, 1″ margins, and double spacing is recommended. More or less words may result in deduction of points!    

  2. Use of artificial intelligence in writing your essay is prohibited. By submitting this essay, you confirm that the work presented is solely your own, and you have not utilized any artificial intelligence assistance. You take pride in the authenticity of your efforts, underscoring your commitment to individual creativity and dedication. 

  3. Deadline: Please submit your essay by Thursday, *May 15th to child@newcanaanlibrary.org 

Our jury will announce the winner on Friday, June 6th!

* The National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was founded on May 15, 1869, by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Suffragists worked for decades to win women the right to vote, which eventually was ratified as the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.
