Program Description

Event Details

Are you a writer in grades 3-5? Join Miss Rebecca to write, write, write! This month, Jerry Craft, Newbery-Award-winning author of New Kid, will join us over Zoom to share his story, offer writing tips, and answer our questions. After Jerry's visit, we'll write our own graphic novels.

Jerry’s presentation takes kids on his journey from being a VERY reluctant reader to becoming a Newbery-Award-winning author. Jerry loves kids and they can tell. He’s very attentive and interactive throughout his presentation, sharing art and writing tips, and inspires them to never give up on anything they want to do. He rounds out the presentation with drawing at the end and answering their questions!

Jerry Craft is the New York Times bestselling and Newbery-Medal-winning author of the graphic novel New Kid, along with its companion books, Class Act and School Trip. Craft is also the creator of Mama’s Boyz, an award-winning comic strip which won the African American Literary Award five times. He is a cofounder of the Schomburg Center’s Annual Black Comic Book Festival. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts.
