Based in the world of Frank Baum’s “Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, Wicked became one of the most iconic Broadway blockbusters of the early 21st century. Told from the perspective of the witches, Wicked focuses on Elphaba (the fabled “Wicked Witch of the West”) and Glinda (“the Good Witch”). Meeting prior to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, their relationship is the heart of a musical which addresses themes such as power, ego, façade, and friendship. Having grossed over $1 billion, Wicked has charmed audiences as much with its soaring solos and poignant duets as it has with fantastical staging. Professor Harel’s lecture will be accompanied by musical clips.

Gil Harel (PhD, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from western art music to contemporary musical theater. In 2020, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award.
