In 1952, Sight and Sound film magazine had the idea of asking critics to name the greatest films of all time. The tradition became decennial, increasing in size and prestige as the decades passed.  The Sight and Sound poll has come to be regarded as the most important of the "greatest ever film" lists. The critic Roger Ebert described it as "the most respected of the countless polls of great movies." Join us for a series of Sight and Sound film screenings, each featuring a 5-10-minute introduction that provides insight into the film’s themes, background, and significance.

Wong Kar Wei's 2000 film In the Mood for Love took fifth place in the Sight & Sound 2022 poll. Once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, the film  is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema, and is a milestone in Wong’s esteemed career.
