Program Description

Event Details

Vicky Nguyen's remarkable memoir about her family’s harrowing escape from Communist Vietnam to the United States serves as a love letter to America and potent reminder of its promise. Vicky will be in conversation with podcaster and influencer Anna Kai. This program is co-sponsored by AAPI Westport and OCA Fairfield County in celebration of AAPI Month.

After her parents fled Vietnam by boat with an 8-month-old Vicky in their arms, they resettled on the West Coast and quickly realized that getting to America is only half the story: the second half would be how to make it here. Their grit and resilience in the face of the enormous challenge of making a life in an unfamiliar country taught her well. As her career developed, she was often one of the few Asian American women in the room in a fiercely competitive industry. Brimming with laughter and optimism, Boat Baby is about the ties that bind a family through tragedy, migration, setbacks, and successes. Elm Street Books will be on site for book sales and signing. To pre-order a copy of Boat Baby and pick it up that evening, go to Elm Street Books by clicking here.

Vicky Nguyen is an NBC News senior consumer investigative correspondent and anchor of NBC News Daily. She reports for the Today show, Nightly News with Lester Holt, and NBC News Now. She graduated as valedictorian from the University of San Francisco. Vicky lives in New York with her husband and three daughters. Her parents are always nearby.
