Accessibility and Accommodations

We strive to facilitate access to information and Library services for all patrons. If you have questions about accessibility or a request for accommodation in the Children's Room or Teen Room, please phone 203-594-5002, email the librarian in charge of the program you plan to attend, or email [email protected] with as much lead time as possible. Visit our Accessibility page for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

The vast majority of Library programs are free, and a Library card is typically not needed to attend our programs. Some programs may require advance registration or may be limited to New Canaan cardholders. Attendance may also be limited by age or grade level. At the Library’s discretion, occasionally, a fee may be charged for certain Library programs, including to cover costs.  Fundraising programs by their nature will have fees for participation.

We have no limits on the number of physical items (books, DVDs, etc.) that you can check out. There are limits, however, for borrowing digital items specific to each platform. You can borrow any 10 items at a time from Libby/OverDrive.  You can borrow 8 items per month from Hoopla.

Yes, your Connecticut library card can be used statewide. On your first visit to another library, be sure to bring your photo ID and your New Canaan Library card with you so that the card can be registered with the other library.  You cannot borrow digital items from other libraries.

Our entrances are at street level and have ramps. The Children's Room is just to the left of our main Maple Street entrance, on the Library's Lower Level. There is elevator access to the Library's Mezzanine and Upper Level. Strollers are welcome throughout the Library but are not permitted inside the Children's Storytime Room and Program Rooms in order to maximize use of space and ensure everyone's safety during programs. You are welcome to park your stroller in the Children's Room during programs.

The Children's Room is a space where we encourage laughter, fun, learning, and reading. It is not a quiet zone--it's a zone where children can play and explore. Please help your children be respectful of everyone's safety and needs. Talkative learning is wonderful, but please avoid shouting to friends across the room. Running and climbing are not permitted. If you require a quiet study space, please visit the Library's Upper Level.

There are multiple ways to make this work!

1) Bring the child's (or family's) library card with you to the Library to check out books on the family's account. If their family does not yet have a card, a parent or legal guardian can register for a card. (A parent or legal guardian must be present to open a card on behalf of a child.)

2) If you already have your own Connecticut library card, you can register that card at New Canaan Library and check out books on your account. Simply bring your library card and a photo ID to New Canaan Library to register your card. Be mindful that you're taking on responsibility for any lost or damaged items.

3) If you work full time in New Canaan, you can open your own New Canaan Library card. You will need to bring your photo ID and proof of employment (a staff ID or a letter from your employer) to the Library to register for a card. You can then check out books with your New Canaan Library card. Be mindful that you're taking on responsibility for any lost or damaged items.

Upcoming events are posted on our events calendar. We also send a monthly e-newsletter highlighting children's events and weekly e-newsletters for all library events. Sign up here to get upcoming events in your inbox. You can also talk to a librarian about upcoming events by phone, email ([email protected]), or during your next Library visit.
