This Writing Tips class will focus on writing in the first person from the perspective of a character with hardships or an illness. The first-person narrative will enable writers to fully understand and express the impact that hardship has on a character's motivations. Consider Marie Laure in Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See or Lennie in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.
In this workshop participants will explore an understanding of how these hardships can enhance the story and make readers care more deeply about the character and the story’s outcome.
Come with paper and pen. Laptops are allowed (please remember your power cords). All genres are welcome.
Laura Woodward Cavers instructs the class and has ten years experience teaching writing at Darien and New Canaan Libraries. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing. She hopes to have her first novel, Bell Weathers, published in 2025.
